Health and Safety - Paediatric First Aid Level 3 (12 hour)

Outline

The national standards for first aid in childcare settings state that ‘at least one person who has a current paediatric first-aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present’. Additionally, at least one person with a current paediatric first-aid certificate must accompany every outing.

The Practice Guidance in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the first-aid training requirements for Ofsted-regulated child-care settings. This guidance includes details of the course content and the duration of the training. This Paediatric First Aid course has been developed to meet these requirements.

"New regulations coming soon"

Under current rules, early years providers must have at least one paediatric first aider available on the premises at all times. The new requirement would mean that a nursery recruiting a level 2 or level 3 member of staff who had newly completed their early years/childcare qualification must have an emergency paediatric first aid or a full paediatric first aid certificate, if they are to count towards the staff/qualification ratios under the early years foundation stage. The emergency first aid training course would be the equivalent of 1 day of training and would need to be refreshed every 3 years in order for the staff member to keep counting in the ratios.

The proposals are expected to come into effect by September 2016. The proposals will cover all early years settings except childminders.

Who needs this qualification?

The Paediatric First Aid 12 hour Level 2 Course is primarily aimed at those working in child-care settings, but it will be useful for anyone with responsibility for caring for infants and children. Primary Schools with a reception class would require this qualification.
